TREATMENT

Ultrasound-guided injections

The needle is watched onto the target on screen, so the treatment reaches the structure causing the pain – usually in the same appointment as the diagnosis.

What it is

An injection given while the target is visible on ultrasound. The probe sits over the joint, tendon sheath or bursa; the needle is introduced alongside it and guided precisely to the structure. Placement is confirmed on screen before anything is injected.

Who it may help

What happens on the day

The appointment begins with a history, an examination and a diagnostic scan – the scan decides whether an injection is the right option at all. If it is, the skin is cleaned and numbed where helpful, and the injection is given under guidance. Most patients describe pressure rather than pain. You are welcome to take time to decide rather than proceed on the day.

Aftercare

Evidence and realistic expectations

Guided injections are more accurately placed than landmark injections and are generally better tolerated. Whether an injection helps – and for how long – depends on the structure, the diagnosis and the person. That is discussed honestly before anything is done, not after. No outcome is guaranteed.

DECIDED IN CONSULTATION

Corticosteroid injections are prescription-only medicines and are not advertised; whether one is appropriate is decided in consultation. Hyaluronic acid (Ostenil) and platelet-rich plasma are discussed with their evidence and limits.
